Video Marketing - Does it really work?

September 12th, 2008 by Scott Wood

A number of our clients have asked about video marketing and whether or not it would benefit their business. I will attempt to explain exactly what video marketing would consist of, and how it could potentially benefit driving traffic to a website.

An increasingly popular method of generating visitors to your site can be through creating videos and linking back to your site. You can do this with a backlink embedded in the video itself, or within the video description. Video giants, like Youtube will allow backlinks within the video descriptions and is a great way to drive some free traffic back to your site.

Popular video types include:

- Instructional videos (cooking, DIY, how-to, guides etc)
- Comedy
- Sport
- Music related
- Adult

If you are looking to promote a video site you need to think carefully about what type of video you aim to produce, and will it be popular? Try looking at some of the most popular videos for a search term within Youtube, and see if you can find out why it is so popular. If you can make those unique videos that catch peoples attention, whether it be shocking, funny or scary you will see your visitor numbers skyrocket.

Is it possible to do SEO for a site under construction?

September 9th, 2008 by Scott Wood

Well the short answer would be yes, and yes, a site under construction can rank for search terms within search engines. But think very carefully before embarking on SEO work before a site is fully completed.

One reason why you should not invest too much time on such a site, would be that any changes to text and site structure will affect your rankings - you are best working on the site when it is fully completed.

Another reason - Directory Submissions for example, are always worth doing once a site is up and running to avoid multiple rejections from webmasters. You will also gain the benefit of a clearer understanding of your main keywords to be used within the site

Rather than attempt to complete the SEO work as quickly as possible, allow time for the site to grow naturally, steadily. Your time will be better off spent planning the SEO required for any given project, rather than trying to implement them straight away. Write articles, do your keyword research, scout out the competition, start a small blog in the meantime to add some content to the site. Have your work ready, and it will be easier to implement once the site is live.

Chrome takes 1% of Browser marketshare - But users have their doubts

September 4th, 2008 by Scott Wood

After the official BETA release on Tuesday, Googles new browser “chrome” has been estimated to have taken 1% of the internet broswer market share in only 24 hours. This success, however, has come amidst a ripple of doubt amongst users, who have already identified some major flaws within the browser.

Discovered by blogger Aviv Raff, the “carpet bombing” exploit, enables malicious software to be opened on your computer automatically if it is mistakenly downloaded. This exploit has seemingly slipped through the development net, and poses a potential security risk. There are also concerns over the speed and reliability of the broswer with users experiencing crashing and freezing through general use of the software.

With such a huge uptake of the browser, the software is tested by all different types of users and helps to uncover any problems it has. Im sure these hiccups will be quickly fixed, but for the time being, im sticking with Firefox.

New Google Browser - Chrome

September 2nd, 2008 by Scott Wood

Google have finally lifted the lid on their new Web Browser, which is set for the afternoon today. Dubbed “Chrome”, the highly aniticpated browser, said to be a potential rival to the popular Firefox and Internet Explorer has already been seen as a huge blow to Microsoft’s waning search marketshare.

Up until now, Google has avoiding joining the browser war, but comes in at a time when Microsoft is seen to be on the backfoot, and the arrival of Chrome has the potential to split the browser war right open again.
The browser offers some intuitive features :

- A tab bar above the address bar.
- It lets you fire up Web apps without the toolbar and menus.
- There are thumbnails that show recently visited sites, for easy return clicks.
- Simple “google like” design.
- Inter-functionality with other google products.
- In built phishing protection
As Google’s global reach and market share increases by the day, will this be a final nail in the coffin for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer? Or will Google find themselves spread too thin against the already well established leading browsers? The verdict will be out by the close of the day, i will definately downloading my taking a look to see whether we have a new firefox.

Find more information and a comic strip depicting the new broswers creation at the official Google blog.
